Voting Precincts

A precinct is the smallest civil division of voters in the United States. Each District within a county is divided into precincts for the purposes of establishing a voting location for all residents living within that area. When a citizen registers to vote, that citizen is assigned to a specific voting location, or precinct. For the purposes of government, precincts represent a sector of citizens living within a certain boundary inside a city, county, or township. This is the only location where voters in that assigned precinct are permitted to vote on election day. A national survey has found that the average precinct in the United States represents about 1,100 voters. In Cumberland County we have 26 Precincts in 9 Districts. Our precincts range between about 800 and 3000 voters.

Precinct Captains

A precinct captain acts as a liaison between the party leadership and the voters in that precinct.  A precinct captain assists citizens living within that precinct to register to vote and helps get out the vote on election day. The Cumberland County Republican Party attempts to maintain a precinct captain for each precinct so that our local party can build membership, grow, and get out the vote on election day. This also allows citizens a more localized person to contact with questions about candidates and issues. Please let us know if you are willing to act as a precinct captain or will agree to assist your precinct captain.

If you have any questions or need any assistance, please let us know. You can contact our headquarters at 456-4414 or click here to send a message to our party leadership.
